Citizens Police Academy

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a police officer on patrol? Ever asked yourself how officers prepare for calls that lead into unknown, often dangerous situations?

Perhaps you’ve seen news footage, or a video on Youtube and questioned the actions of the police, as well as events that followed. Maybe you’ve had an interest in law enforcement, would like some questions answered, or would just like to get a “behind the badge” view of law enforcement.  If any of these apply then the Citizens Police Academy is for you.

Citizen Police Academy programs have existed in departments nationwide for years, and were created in an effort to bridge the gap that can sometimes exist between law enforcement and the community they serve. In today’s climate this is more important than ever.

The academy was not designed to train police officers, reserve officers, or even a Citizens Patrol Program, and completion of the class does not grant duties, title, or authority. What is designed to do is give participants a clear understanding of law enforcement while providing a forum where ideas and concerns from both sides of the badge can be voiced and understood.

The Precinct 5 CPA was created with three goals in mind.

To give participants an inside look at the Harris County Constable’s Office Pct. 5 and how we operate.

To provide a “behind the badge” view of law enforcement from the perspective of an officer on patrol.

To open lines of communication and cooperation between our department and the community we serve.

By reaching these goals we hope to strengthen the relationship our department has with the community, better equipping both to more effectively address issues we all face in today’s world.

What can you expect from attending the Citizens Police Academy?

Besides gaining a new perspective on law enforcement, as well as a deeper understanding of how and why we deal with critical situations, you will have the opportunity to get your hands on some of the most state of the art equipment employed by law enforcement today.  You will learn the concepts of officer safety and use of force, then apply them in hands on scenarios that at times mirrors the same training our deputies receive.  You’ll test your skills with the Glock 9mm and AR-15, two of the preferred weapons of police agencies across the country.  You will then take the wheel of a police interceptor and run “Priority One” on a closed driving course.  The academy wraps up by pairing you with an on duty deputy for a ride along.  These are just a few of the experiences waiting for you.

The academy is a 10 week course held one night a week at our command station, located at 17423 Katy Freeway.
